about cyanotypes
Cyanotypes are made by exposing specially-treated paper to UV light. The image is created by layering either an acetate negative image or objects like leaves, flowers, etc. on top of the paper. The areas where the light is blocked by the negative or object turns white and the rest turns Prussian blue. I give a coffee bath to most of the pieces you’ll see here, which gives them their darker tone. Like photography, each print is individually exposed, developed, and toned.
Care + Guarantee
I apply a protective coating to each cyanotype to protect it from surface damage, so it can be displayed with or without glass. Avoid displaying in direct sunlight. If fading occurs, store it in darkness for a few days to restore the original color.
I use best practices to keep your piece looking new for years to come. However, some chemicals can have unexpected interactions. If you notice your cyanotype discoloring or fading and the method above doesn’t work, email a picture to julia@ juniperandbone.com and I’ll replace it free of charge.
